Drinking water and water treatment

Humans and water – What important role does water play in human life?

Water plays a central role in human life, as the human body consists of almost 70 percent water, which corresponds to about 40 liters of fluid. It performs vital tasks in the body: water regulates cardiovascular function and is essential for optimal metabolism. Particularly important organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain depend on an adequate supply of water.

In addition, water has a direct influence on physical appearance and the sensory organs. For example, a quarter of the hair roots consist of water, which is why drinking enough fluids promotes hair growth. The eyes even consist of 99 percent water.

Since humans lose about two liters of fluid every day, a daily intake of two and a half to three liters is essential to prevent the body from dehydrating. Consciously managing your own water balance leads to better performance, improved health, and the ability to cope better with daily tasks.

Water as a resource

Water is omnipresent in our everyday lives and seems to be a matter of course—whether we are showering, cooking, or gardening. But behind this routine lies a precious and limited resource: although 71% of the earth is covered in water, only 3.5% of it is usable as drinking water. In many places, complex treatment processes are necessary to make water drinkable. While we in Europe consume around 3,900 liters of water per capita every day – which is equivalent to the volume of 30 bathtubs if you include the virtual water consumption for clothing and food – around 750 million people worldwide have no access to clean drinking water.

There are effective ways to save water in everyday life to counteract this scarcity: those who prefer to shower instead of taking a bath save up to 50% water. Using a dishwasher is also much more efficient than washing up by hand, as it uses 50% less water and a third less energy. When buying new household appliances, you should therefore pay particular attention to water and energy consumption. Even small changes in behavior, such as washing fruit in a bowl instead of under running water, help to minimize personal consumption.

Since clean drinking water is not a given in many regions, technological solutions are being used. For example, we provide mobile water treatment plants in disaster areas such as Haiti, which supply up to 20,000 people with clean drinking water. The aim is to create a deeper understanding of the importance of this resource, in line with the motto: "Grünbeck – we understand water."

How does lime get into drinking water?

  • As it flows through the soil layers, rainwater becomes enriched with minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, which cause hardness.

How does hard water make itself noticeable?

When do we refer to water as hard?

Water hardness is measured in "German degrees of hardness" (°dH). Water is considered hard at 14 °dH or above. The higher the degree of hardness, the more calcareous the water. At 14 °dH, there are approximately 250 grams of calcium per cubic meter of drinking water. At 14 °dH and the average water consumption of a family of four, this amounts to around 30 kilograms of calcium carbonate in just one year. Water

hardness can be determined using a water testing device for total hardness.
We recommend a residual hardness of 3–6 °dH. The new Drinking Water Ordinance does not specify a limit value.

Water treatment and technologies

How does modern water treatment work?

The first crucial step is filtration, which begins at the domestic water inlet. This is where Grünbeck's pureliQ fine filter comes into play, effectively filtering out tiny particles such as grains of sand or rust with its special fabric. As these particles are on average twice as thick as a human hair, they can easily accumulate in pipes. By using pureliQ, you can specifically prevent deposits and corrosion damage and protect your fittings and household appliances from costly malfunctions.

In the second step, softening ensures noticeably less lime in the water. Grünbeck's intelligent softliQ systems use the proven ion exchange process for this purpose. Hardness-forming substances such as calcium and magnesium are replaced by sodium, which reduces the water hardness. What makes softliQ special is its intelligence: it always provides exactly as much soft, softened water as you currently need.

For your safety and excellent water quality, you should look for valid DIN-DVGW certification when purchasing, which guarantees that all necessary standards are met.

How does the ion exchange process work?

Why is water treatment useful?

Our waterworks supply impeccable drinking water that can be enjoyed without further treatment. However, only 2 to 5% of the water used in households is used for drinking and cooking. The vast majority of water consumption is used for bathing and showering, flushing toilets, or washing, for example. The

more calcareous the water is and the more it is heated, the more lime precipitates. This can settle in the pipes. The result is limescale deposits, which in turn lead to energy losses. The entire domestic plumbing system, including the sometimes expensive fittings and appliances in bathrooms and kitchens, should be protected against costly damage.

Aggressive water causes corrosion in the pipe system, which can result in expensive consequential damage. Therefore, depending on its natural composition and intended use, the water must be treated to prevent limescale and corrosion. Grünbeck dosing reduces limescale formation in the pipes. In addition, a protective layer is formed on the inside of the pipes, which protects your installation preventively—e.g., against rust formation or pitting.

How can I prevent limescale in drinking water?

What are the advantages of a water softener in everyday life?

  • Less limescale on fittings, tiles, and shower walls
  • Longer service life for household appliances such as washing machines, coffee makers, and boilers
  • Lower energy consumption for hot water production
  • Softer water for skin and hair
  • Less cleaning effort and lower consumption of detergents and cleaning agents

What is water softening and why is it important?

Water softening reduces the lime content in water. Lime is caused by calcium and magnesium ions, which occur in high concentrations in hard water. A softening system converts these into sodium ions – the water becomes "soft." Soft water protects household appliances, fittings, and heating systems and makes your skin and hair feel better.

Grünbeck products and systems

How much salt does such a system require?

  • Approximately two 25 kg bags of salt per year.

(These figures apply to an average 3-person household and a hardness level of approx. 20 °dH.)

What is the difference between a single, double, and triple system?

Health, household, and everyday life

What are the benefits of soft water?

  • More enjoyment from tea and coffee
  • Preserve the value of your property
  • Save time and money
  • Protect the environment and conserve resources
  • Protection for your household appliances
  • Pleasant laundry
  • Up to 50% less washing powder costs
  • Soft skin & soft hair

Is it true that soft water can save you money?

A water softening system is an easy way to save money by reducing water hardness to an ideal range of three to six degrees German hardness. This not only protects sensitive systems, but also reduces limescale deposits in pipes, on tiles, and on fittings.

The financial benefits for the household are manifold:

  • Lower consumption: Soft water reduces expenditure on cleaning and laundry detergents as well as personal care products such as shampoos, as significantly less of these products is required.
  • No need for additional products: Descaling agents for kettles, coffee machines, and washing machines can be completely removed from the shopping list.
  • Longer service life: Less limescale means fewer harmful deposits, which leads to a longer service life for electrical appliances and bathroom fittings.

Overall, water softening can save up to $400 per year, depending on the size of the household. In addition to the financial aspect, it also improves quality of life, as the reduced cleaning effort frees up more time for family and friends.

What really helps against annoying limescale deposits?

Conventional household remedies such as vinegar or chemicals only combat limescale superficially, can attack materials, and cannot reach deep-seated deposits in pipes and fittings. This results in reduced water pressure and blocked pipes.

The real solution: prevention through water treatment.

  • Grünbeck's softliQ water softeners reliably reduce the lime content and prevent the formation of deposits throughout the entire system.
  • In combination with the pureliQ fine filter, your installation is also protected against dirt particles.

Your advantage: No more tedious scrubbing, full pipe pressure, and long-term value retention of your appliances.

Is it true that water softening systems have a positive effect on our health?

The answer to the question of how water softeners affect our health lies primarily in the noticeable improvement in skin and hair care. While hard, calcareous water often causes dry, tight skin and brittle hair after bathing or showering, soft water provides a much more pleasant feeling on the body.

To achieve this result, Grünbeck's intelligent softliQ water softeners use an ion exchange process in which the hardness minerals calcium and magnesium are specifically exchanged for sodium. An important health aspect here is that this process does not compromise the supply of essential minerals, as we mainly absorb calcium, magnesium, and sodium through our diet. To meet your sodium requirements through softened water alone, you would have to drink around ten liters a day – an amount that can be replaced in nutritional terms by just two wholemeal salami rolls.

In combination with the pureliQ fine filter, which reliably removes dirt particles at the house water inlet, you can achieve an optimal water hardness between 3 and 6 °dH. This not only protects your building services from deposits, but also promotes your personal well-being through excellent water quality.

Should I shut off the water supply centrally and disconnect the water softener from the power supply when going on vacation or being away from home for an extended period of time?

Grünbeck recommends not turning off the water for hygienic reasons and not taking the water softener out of operation. Taking the system out of operation constitutes an interruption in operation that deviates from its intended use. According to generally accepted technical rules, interruptions in the operation of water softeners should be avoided.

What is the water quality like after water softening?

  • Even after softening, the water quality still meets the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance.

Is salt harmful to health? Can it cause problems with blood pressure or circulation?

The water softening systems comply with the strict requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance. According to the WHO, the sodium added poses no health risks. The water softening system does not add sodium chloride.

Is it harmful if calcium and magnesium are exchanged?

No. Although magnesium and calcium are very important for our bodies, drinking water plays only a minor role in ensuring an adequate supply of these substances. Food plays a much greater role. For example, you can meet your daily calcium requirement with just one cup of yogurt. By comparison, 20 liters of water contain the same amount of calcium.
